Times tables · Grade 3
In Grade 3 you learn: the 2, 5 and 10 times tables; the 3, 4 and 8 times tables; multiplication and division facts together; all multiplication facts to 10 × 10.
Times tables are the multiplication facts up to 12 × 12. Knowing them instantly makes division, fractions, area, percentages and almost everything else much faster. Every fact also tells you two division facts.
Key facts
- Multiplying can be done in either order: 4 × 7 = 7 × 4.
- Each fact gives two divisions: 6 × 8 = 48 so 48 ÷ 6 = 8 and 48 ÷ 8 = 6.
- Use facts you know: 4× is double 2×, 8× is double 4×, 6× is double 3×.
- 9× trick: 9 × 7 = 10 × 7 − 7 = 63.
- × 10 makes every digit worth 10 times more: 7 × 30 = 7 × 3 × 10 = 210.
- An array (rows and columns) shows a times fact as a picture.
