Why does won’t mean will not?
In a contraction, the apostrophe shows where letters have been left out: do not → don’t, I am → I’m. But won’t looks odd. It comes from an old way of saying will, “wol”, so “wol not” got squeezed into won’t. Fill in the gaps on the board.

I’m, she’ll, cannot → can’t, they’ve, it is (or it has) → it’s. Careful: its with no apostrophe means “belonging to it”, as in “the dog wagged its tail”.
