Why does your heart have two sides?
Your heart is really two pumps side by side. The right side sends blood to your lungs to pick up oxygen; the left side pumps that oxygen-rich blood all round your body. Then it comes back and goes round again. Turn the heart round and find its four chambers. Why do you think the wall on the left side is thicker?

The left ventricle has to push blood all the way round your body, down to your toes and back, so it needs more muscle. The right ventricle only pumps blood to the lungs, right next door.
