Tally charts and pictograms · Grade 3
In Grade 3 you learn: scaled picture graphs and answering questions about data.
A tally chart is a quick way to count things as they happen. You draw one mark for each one, and every fifth mark goes across the other four to make a “gate” of five. A pictogram shows the totals with pictures. The key tells you how many each picture stands for.
Key facts
- Draw one line for each item. The 5th line goes across the first four: 卌 = 5.
- Count a tally in fives first, then add the single lines.
- The frequency is the total for each row.
- A pictogram always needs a key, such as ■ = 4 people.
- Part of a picture is part of the key: half a ■ = 2 when ■ = 4.
- Number of pictures = frequency ÷ key.
