Percentages

Per cent means ‘out of 100’. To find a percentage of an amount, find 1% or 10% first and build up.

Key facts

  • 10% = divide by 10.
  • 1% = divide by 100.
  • 50% = half, 25% = a quarter.

Worked examples

Example 1

Find 35% of 80.

  1. 10% of 80: 80 ÷ 10 = 8
  2. 30% is three lots. 8 × 3 = 24
  3. 5% is half of 10%. 8 ÷ 2 = 4
  4. Add them. 24 + 4 = 28

Answer: 28
