Multiplying and dividing
For bigger multiplications, split the numbers into parts you can handle (the grid method) or use column multiplication. For division, use short division (the bus stop) and carry remainders to the next digit.
Key facts
- Grid method: split each number into hundreds, tens and ones, multiply each pair, add.
- Column method: multiply by the ones, then the tens (put a 0 first), then add.
- Short division: divide each digit in turn and carry the remainder.
Worked examples
Example 1
Work out 34 × 26.
- Split into tens and ones. 30 + 4 and 20 + 6
- Multiply each pair. 600, 180, 80, 24
- Add them. 600 + 180 + 80 + 24 = 884
Answer: 884
Example 2
Work out 852 ÷ 4.
- 8 ÷ 4 = 2. 2
- 5 ÷ 4 = 1 remainder 1, carry the 1 to make 12. 1
- 12 ÷ 4 = 3. 213
Answer: 213
