Travel and transport

Travel words help you get around: ⟦bus⟧, ⟦train⟧, ⟦plane⟧, ⟦taxi⟧, ⟦ship⟧, ⟦bicycle⟧. You buy a ⟦ticket⟧, go to the ⟦station⟧ or the ⟦airport⟧ and take your ⟦suitcase⟧ on holiday.

Key facts

  • Say how you travel with ⟦by⟧ and no ⟦the⟧: ⟦by bus⟧, ⟦by train⟧, ⟦by plane⟧, ⟦by car⟧. But we walk ⟦on foot⟧.
  • You get ⟦on⟧ and ⟦off⟧ a bus, train or plane, and ⟦into⟧ and ⟦out of⟧ a car or taxi: ⟦Get off the bus at the next stop.⟧
  • Where you catch it: a train at the ⟦railway station⟧, a plane at the ⟦airport⟧, a bus at the ⟦bus stop⟧, a ship at the ⟦port⟧.
  • At the station or airport: ⟦a single ticket⟧ (one way), ⟦a return ticket⟧ (there and back), ⟦platform⟧, ⟦timetable⟧, ⟦passport⟧, ⟦luggage⟧, ⟦delayed⟧.
  • Useful questions: ⟦What time does the next train leave?⟧ ⟦Which platform does it go from?⟧ ⟦How long does the journey take?⟧
